About 200 people had come to take leave of S/Y Dream and her crew. At 5 p.m. she left for Helgoland. Almost a perfect sailing and Dream made during the night 7-8 knots. Arriving at Helgoland Monday morning at 10 a.m.. We left on 4. August for Calais located about 300 miles away. The crew was divided into three watches and this worked out perfectly.
In the beginning the wind was good but later on it became almost windless.
Thursday evening we sang good old Danish earhangers to outdo the bad mood caused by the foul wind.
Friday Michael "caught" his first fish a garfish jigged in the belly.
Saturday the wind was rising with gusts of wind up to 20 metres per second. We had to shorten sail and Niels Peter and Skipper were awashed by the cold waves in The English Channel.
To keep the record straight it should be mentioned that everybody followed our security precautions - including the use of lifelines. We arrived safely at Calais Saturday at 7.40 p.m. and celebrated the good yachting with cold beers. Now we had our first urgent shower on this trip and went out on a round of the nightspots. Due to fatigue it was a short visit.
Sunday we went sightseeing and enjoyed a delicious dinner cooked by René and Michael. They are not the only masters of the culinary art, Mikkel, the wardroom cook, is actually capable of making armycanned food delicious.
Monday we collected parcels sent from three lovely girls in Denmark.
We agreed on heading for Dieppe to see the total solar eclipse on 11. August.
